Bangkok Highlights: Day Two

Another fun filled day in Bangkok...

1. More Street Food – I ventured out on my own to hunt down some pad thai. There are tons of street carts and restaurants all over the place so it wasn’t too hard to find one near the hotel. I must say that after eating two different preparations of pad thai here, I prefer the American version. Now I love fish sauce just as much as any other Asian, perhaps even more, but the noodles were so overseasoned with this stuff that it was a turn-off. Still it’s fun to have food available everywhere and to snack throughout the day.

2. Chatuchak Market – This is a huge open air market that sells everything and anything. It spans 3500 acres so talk about massive. If you’re the bargaining flea market type, you would love this place. For me, I’m neither so I found it really difficult to purchase something. Now I totally regret it tho b/c I have tons of bahts left.

3. Hotel Pool – The hotel has a really nice garden and pool area. The rooftop pool was a nice place to cool off and take in some drinks.

4. Calypso Cabaret – Ladyboy heaven! It’s a old-school Vegas style caberet with men, women (ladyboys) and some who are in the middle. Singing, dancing, drama and yes and flash of nudity! There were a lot of guys in the audience just staring and staring. My coworker joked that they were battling in their mind if they would want them or not, our answer was that they were thinking yes! It was difficult to tell with some of the ladyboys b/c they are so petite and feminine looking but the structure of their face always gave it away. At the end of the show, they lined up and took pictures with ppl from the audience. We got some killer shots, hot hot hot!

5. Kao San Street – This street gets blocked off at night and it’s full of foreigners and locals who walk up and down the street to do some late night shopping, eating and to hop into bars, nightclubs and restaurants. In comparison to Patpong, this street is way chill and less about ‘shows’. If you ever visit Bangkok and want a place to hang out at night, I recommend this area.

Bangkok Highlights - Day 1

Hello from Bangkok!
On the long voyage over to India, my co-worker and I decided to take a side trip to Thailand. There's so much to see and do here but I only have 2 days to do it all! So here goes...

Day 1:

1. Buffet breakfast at our hotel Pullman King Power. They had both American and Asian style cuisine for breakfast but of course we went for the Asian goodies. There eggs and waffles looked pretty whack anyways. We had noodle soup, dim sum, sushi, and fresh fruit. A great way to start the day.

2. Grand Palace. This place is amazing! You have to see it for yourself to really appreciate how grand it really is. Sky high buildings, decked out with glass, tile, and gold. Gigantic statues of warriors protect the doorways. It's one of the most beautiful sights this pair of brown eyes have seen!

3. Wat Po - This temple houses the giant statue of Buddha. It's something like 150 ft long. It makes you drop your jaw, it's so big. The picture below should give some sense of the massiveness awesomeness sparkly giant.

4. Street food! aka Street Meat. The whole entire day we ate, noodles, meats on sticks, fruit, deserts, thai tea out of a plastic bag (with straws of course, we're not savages, geez). There's so much to eat, so little time! You would think that you'll see rows of vendors selling pad thai and angel wings - but that's so unauthentic American. Honestly have not seen a pad thai cart yet (I will hunt down tomorrow). It's delicious stuff, if you ever come here, don't be surprised if you never set foot in a restaurant. The best part is that it's about 10-50 BHT per item, that's less than $1.50!

5. Facial and Angela's Beauty Shop - A full facial and hot mask package for 500 BHT, that's like $15 for an hour long facial. They're known for zit-popping here(i know, gross) but I had a minor breakout from all the long hours and lack of sleep the days prior and now it's all gone. It was a good way to nap in the middle of the day too. Loved it!

6. Monsoon - when it rains it freaking pours! From 0 to 6 inches in less than 30 minutes. We tried to wait it out but had to brave the puddles and torrential rain to catch a cab and get the hell outta there.

7. Patpong Night Market - Had another bowl of noodle soup and walked around a bit. Oh this place is a sight to see. Fake Gucci and LV everywhere, they even have fake Tiffany's jewelry (which I might pick something up today, they're really good fakes). Best (no worst) part are all the shows. Use your imagination here, boxing was the most tame show, the rest were dirty as dirty can get. Menus of this stuff and they keep asking us if we wanted a peek. Hello! do we look like perverts! I almost socked someone in the mouth! Another gross thing - you see so many older white men hopping in cabs with their lady or ladyboy friends. Every time I see a foreigner who is a single male, I can't help but think what they came here for. Uggh, I just about puked in my mouth.
